Tarkeshwar Mahadev is a Sidh Peeth, an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is beautifully nestled at an altitude of approx 1800m in the serenity of the Gharwal Himalayas. The temple is surrounded by a thick forest of old gigantic cedar and pine.
Built on a dream, the ancient temple has a mystical backstory.
The temple was built around the dream of a social reformer and a philanthropist, Late Shri Prayag Dutt Dhasmana who was also known by the name “Lakhpati Sahab”.
As per the records, the local shepherds originally found a ShivaLinga in that area. Upon that discovery, the village people sanctified the area and created a small shrine by placing a few stones around ShivaLinga. ShivaLinga or Lingam means “evidence of God or God’s power “.
One night Lakhpati Sahab saw a dream in which he found a lot of Murtis (Idols of Hindu deities) underneath the sacred spot of the Shivalinga, connoting the place as a divine abode. Abiding by the dream as a divine message, Late Shri Prayag Dutt Dhasmana set out to unearth the mystery. Legend has it that the team of excavators could actually find a lot of idols beneath the surface.Lakhpati Sahab understood the divine instruction and set out to consecrate the sanctum by building a temple.
He set up a beautiful temple with a dome-shaped top “Shikhar” and a spacious compound area. “Shikhar” which means peak is a metaphor of the spiritual growth of the devotee. Later, Lakhpati Sahab also added a Dharamshala for the accommodation of the devotees and a sacred Kund (pond) for the holy dip and prayer.

The picturesque temple compound open to sky, protected by dense forest and surrounded by the Himalayas on all four sides make it an ideal place for deep rejuvenation of the soul.

The spiritual aura of the temple and the serenity of its surroundings make it an ideal place for Yoga, Meditation and other spiritual activities. This is a place for deepening your spiritual connection. Presence of three gigantic trees with the top forming a trident around the temple serves like a message that the temple is protected by Shiva himself.
Esoterically in this place, the seekers have experienced a deep state of absorption.
