“Be a sadhu in your heart but in the world take active part”.
Swami Rama was born Brij Kisore Dhasmana , to a northern Indian Brahmin family in a small village called Toli in the Garhwal Region of Himalayas. From an early age he was raised in the Himalayas by his master “Bengali Baba” and, under the guidance of his master, he traveled from temple to temple and studied with a variety of Himalayan saints and sages, including his grandmaster. His Master also sent him to other yogis and adepts of the Himalayas to gain new perspectives and insights into the ancient teachings.
At the young age of 24 he was anointed as Shankracharya of Karvirpitham in south India. Swami ji relinquished this position to pursue intense sadhana in the caves of Himalayas, having successfully completed this sadhana, he was directed by his master to go to Japan and to the west in order to illustrate the scientific basis of the ancient yogic practices. At the Menninger foundation in Topeka Kansas, Swami ji convincingly demonstrated the capacity of the mind to control so called involuntary physiological process such as the heart rate, body temperature and brain waves, this experiment became global sensation medical science. His work in the United states continued for 23 years and during this period he established the Himalayan international institute.
Swami ji became well known globally as a yogi, teacher, philosopher, poet humanist , and philanthropist. His models of preventive medicine, holistic health and stress management have permeated the main stream of western medicine. In 1993 Swami ji returned to India where he established the Himalayan Institute Hospital Trust in the foothills of Garhwal Himalayas helping many by providing them the medical health facility and the regions first medical college. Swami ji left his physical plane in Nov 1996 but the seeds he has sown continue to sprout, bloom and bear fruits. His teachings embodied in the words, “love, serve, remember” continue to inspire many students whose good fortune it has been to come into contuse with such an accomplished selfless and loving master, being a poet and also a writer he has written over 100 books in his life.
